How to start a personal training business in the UK (2026)
Going self-employed as a personal trainer in the UK is more accessible than ever — but the admin can quietly eat your evenings if you don't set it up properly from day one.
1. Get qualified and insured
You'll need a Level 3 Personal Training qualification (CIMSPA-recognised) and public liability insurance — most providers charge £6–£15/month.
2. Register as self-employed
Tell HMRC within 3 months of starting. Set up a separate business bank account on day one — it makes accounting and Stripe payouts much cleaner.
3. Decide your pricing
UK PT rates range from £25–£75/hour for 1-2-1 sessions. Don't undersell — packages of 5–10 sessions and recurring memberships will smooth your cash flow.
4. Pick your software stack
Pick one tool that does bookings, payments, workouts and messaging — instead of stitching together five free apps. PT software like FitDesk has a free Starter plan to get going.
5. Find your first 10 clients
Friends-of-friends, your gym's notice board, and a single Instagram reel a week will usually get you to 10 paying clients in 60–90 days. Track every lead in your software so nothing slips.
